Statement on Commission Positions

The Career and Placement Service strives to provide information that will connect local Students to the best possible job opportunities offering training, support, and structure in entry-level career positions. Ideally, we look for positions that offer work experience related to the student’s career goals in which they can continue building skills on-the-job.

We will post positions for some commission employers who meet the following criteria and complete the attached form. Assisting employers when promoting commission opportunities to our students, graduates and alumni is limited to jobs within the following parameters:

  1. Company must provide training and ongoing mentoring.
  2. Company must provide marketing and advertising of product.
  3. NO up-front, out-of-pocket, non-refundable fees, goods, inventories or other financial commitments are required of students. Please explain any licensing fees or other reimbursable expenses on a separate sheet.
  4. NO part of compensation is dependent on recruiting others.
  5. After starting with the company/organization, if the student or company terminates the relationship, the student is not financially or otherwise encumbered to the company (e.g. money, products, training, airfare expenses, etc.)

Statement on Network Marketing Organizations

Network Marketing Companies are not considered “employers” by CAPS and are not eligible to participate in resume referrals, job listings, employer presentations, and/or sponsorships for on-campus activities.

CAPS considers organizations that engage in the following to be Network Marketing Companies:

  • Sponsoring an individual to set up his/her own business for the purpose of selling products or services and/or recruiting other individuals to set up their own business; and
  • Requiring an initial cash or capital investment, account balance or similar fiscal requirements from this individual, with the organization itself serving as an umbrella or parent corporation. The initial investment may include but is not limited to such things as direct payment of a fixed fee, payment to attend an orientation or training session, and/or purchase of a starter kit.

Another characteristic of a Network Marketing Organization may be:

  • Compensation is often in the form of straight commission, fees from others under their sponsorship in the organization, and/or a percentage of sales generated by others.
